Welcome to my "Wild West Tour" information Web Site.
This web page is meant to serve two purposes. The first is to provide information to fellow bikers regarding a route to Sturgis, South Dakota that may be helpful for planning purposes. The second is to provide my students, and other interested parties, with an account of my sixteen day journey from Boston to the Northern Great Plains and back again. Included are some photographs we took along the way, information about my bike and how I prepared for the trip, a map of my route, an abreviated daily log, and a trip summary.
While touring the Northeast and the Lake Champlain Valley in the summer of 2008, my buddy Dave and I began to talk of a motorcycle tour of the Great Plains for the summer of 2009. We touched base over the next several months and although our conversations were kept at a very high level, it became pretty clear that this trip was going to happen. The departure date changed a little bit for a number of reasons, but only by a few days. By early June, I had a date to depart the Boston area and begin the long journey west. My plans for a tour of the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota were about to happen!! I timed the trip intentionally to miss the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which is the largest one in the world! On this occasion of my visiting the Black Hills for the first time, I wanted to enjoy them without the company of 500,000 other motorcycle enthusiasts.
The trip involved myself and two others. Chris is another teacher I work with, and Dave is a friend of over thirty years
who has been doing long distance touring for a long time. As it turned out, Chris only went as far as Wisconsin due
to time constraints. We met Dave at his home in Racine. We stayed for one full day, and the following day, Chris left to return to Boston, and Dave
and I struck out for the Great Plains. For me, the trip was fantastic. The sixteen days that I was gone involved a rear tire blowout, lightening storms
and downpours, a Brewers baseball game, lots of wildlife, unbelievable scenery, thousands of enjoyable miles on my bike, great company, and memories that will last
the rest of my life!!
